Endometriosis Basic Research.
The staff of the Endometriosis Institute has been in the forefront of the basic endometriosis research for more than three decades and is primarily interested in the pathophysiology of endometriosis and the role of the immune system. Over the years, we have reported changes in the immune system associated with endometriosis, leading to decreased apoptosis (programmed cell death) in endometriotic cells and an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines, resulting in a local as well as systemic inflammatory reaction and associated symptoms. Our most recent studies suggest an alteration in the ratio of pro- and anti-apoptotic genes in the endometrium in women with endometriosis.
